36, FROM DORSET, RAN THE SOUTH WEST COAST PATH FOR PROSTATE CANCER UK
WITH THE SOUTH WEST COAST PATH passing her front door, Alyce Rockliff was familiar with many of its local sections. So when her dad, Richard, 73, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2019, it inspired her to run the entire length as an epic fundraiser. ‘I felt pretty helpless when Dad was diagnosed,’ says Alyce. ‘In the past, we’d run parts of the path together, so that was the sentimental reason why I wanted to run it all.’ So, in May, she set off from Minehead, Somerset, averaging 15.5 miles a day. ‘During the first two weeks, my knees hurt because of all the descent I was doing,’ she says. ‘On day 12, I pretty much cried the whole way. But after taping my knees, my body clicked into place and I pushed on. There were so many beautiful places I passed that I made a mental note to revisit. The south Cornish coast with its ruggedness and coves was stunning.’
