Colour-blocking is the art of combining complementary shades in one garment to highlight unique style lines, and designer Julia Claridge has opted for a striking red and hot pink jersey to create the cosy Constance sweater. This jumper is super simple to make, giving you the opportunity to experiment with a rainbow of colours, master working with jersey and attach ribbing to the neckband and cuffs.

Download the pattern and cutting layouts at sewmag.co.uk. Pin and stitch the top bodice front to the bottom bodice, right sides together, then repeat for the back and sleeve panels. Join the front and back at the shoulders. Stitch the short sides of the neckband together. Mark the halfway point on the band, then fold it to find the quarter points and note them on the neckline.

Starting at one shoulder seam, gently tug the neck into a straight line and mark the halfway point. Bring these points together then mark the quarters. Fold the neckband in half, matching the raw edges and concealing the seam.

Match each quarter point on the folded neckband to the ones around the neckline, right sides together. The neckband will be smaller than the neck edge. Gently pull the neckband between each quarter as you sew. Stitch the side of the cuffs, right sides together, and fold so that the raw edges meet and the seam is inside.

Match the seams, then pin and stitch the side seams from sleeve to hem edge, right sides together. Mark the halfway point in between the cuff and sleeve. Apply the cuffs and hem in the same way as the neckband.
