Refashion a plain shirt with a needle and stranded cotton. Lana Red shows you how to embellish in style.

EMBELLISH

YOU WILL NEED

■ Shirt or blouse with a collar

■ Stranded cotton

■ Needle with a large eye

■ Fabric chalk or pencil

■ Scissors

■ Basic sewing kit

CREATING YOUR DESIGN

Step one Start by ironing your shirt and placing it on a flat surface. Button the shirt up and position the buttoned line on top. Draw a straight line across the front, next to the buttons, using your pencil or chalk. Decide on the placement of your heart and ‘break’ the drawn line by adding the heart symbol in between. 01

Step two Measure the length of your button shirt, then double it and add 10cm. This will be the length of stranded cotton that you will need for stitching the front. Cut the thread to size.

STITCHING YOUR DESIGN

Step one Tie a knot at one end of your embroidery thread. Insert your needle at the top of your shirt from back to front, about 0.5cm from the top. This will be your stitching width. 02

Step two Pull the thread all the way through until the knot reaches the shirt. Start embroidering the drawn line using backstitch. 03

Step three When you reach the heart shape, follow the line of the heart by ‘breaking’ the straight line. Continue embroidering the heart using
