Becoming a bitmore forgetful with age is a common comic trope, but sometimes frequentmemory lapses signal somethingmore serious, such as cognitive decline. The good news is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was found to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease among women at risk of developing it. A new study fromthe University of East Anglia tracked 1,178 women from 10 countries who were over the age of 50. It showed that HRT use is associated with better memory, cognition and larger brain volumes in later life among women carrying the APOE4 gene, a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. HRT wasmost effective when taken early in perimenopause, rather than later.
