The Loose Women and Strictly star reveals how she stays in shape and how she’s overcoming her phobia of ageing

K aye Adams swapped the comfort of her Loose Women desk for the glitzy Strictly dance floor, something which initially terrified her so much that she almost turned the gig down for fear of looking ‘tragic.’ The star explained, ‘All the sexy stuff, oh my God, it just gives me the ick. I’m worried it’s going to look tragic, a woman of my age – the whole thing about trying to appear dance-y when you’re older.’

Regardless of her Strictly journey, at 59, Kaye looks utterly fabulous and there’s no doubt her love of fitness will have aided her dance training. While fitness is no problem for Kaye, something she’s really struggled with in recent years is her anxiety about fast approaching 60.

But with the milestone birthday coming up later this year, Kaye, who is mum to daughters Charly, 20, and Bonnie, 16, has finally decided to throw caution to the wind and embrace her age. ‘At this age I think, “why not?”’ she said. And Kaye is feeling happier and healthier than ever…

GETTING PHYSICAL

Kaye has a body that many decades younger would envy, and she maintains her physique with lots of walking and regular workouts. Admitting that she’s had to be more careful as she gets older, Kaye said, ‘For most of my twenties, I gave in to junk food and socialising until [radio presenter] Shereen Nanjiani dragged me along to a step class and changed my ways.’ She added, ‘I had another lapse when I had the kids but probably for the past 10 years I have been pretty rigorous about being vigorous. I don’t see it as a chore. I love skiing and tennis and if I can’t exercise I get very twitchy.’ She added, ‘I also enjoy spin classes – I attempt to make time to fit in a couple of sessions a week.’

But there are some exercises that Kaye avoids nowadays. ‘I’m too old for burpees,’ she recently confessed. ‘I was doing a Joe Wicks workout, I love him, but it got to the burpees and I thought, “really? At my age?”’

Luckily, Kaye has her dog to keep her active, too. ‘My saviour has been my beloved dog, Bea,’ says the presenter. ‘I treasure my long weekend walks with her.’

Kaye admitted that she initially gained weight thanks to relying on booze and cakes, but turned it around by switching to a vegetarian diet. ‘I eventually worked out where I was going wrong and adopted a much healthier veggie diet and began to feel much better
