DIRTY DANCING

Recounting a tale from his wife Zara’s 70s-themed 30th birthday party, Mike revealed his mother-in-law Anne, the Princess Royal, had an up close and personal encounter with his crown jewels. ‘I was dancing on the dance floor, I had flares on, full outfit but it was quite tight. Nothing ever fits – rugby player’s bum and legs,’ he shared. Mike continued, ‘I was dancing with my mother-in-law and I did a sl*t drop… Ripped my trousers, straight in front of her.’ Mortifyingly, he added, ‘It happened to be that my boxers that I had on at that time said, “Nibble my nuts.” As I turned around, she’s gone, “I’d rather not.”

BOOZY BONDING

It was Prince Harry who brought Zara and Mike together

If Mike’s stint on I’m a Celebrity in 2022 taught us anything, it’s that the royals aren’t so different to us after all. The former rugby pro, 45, met his wife Zara, who is the late Queen’s granddaughter, in – of all places – a pub. During a trip to Sydney in 2003, Prince Harry introduced his cousin to Mike who, after just being dropped from England’s World Cup squad, was drowning his sorrows with beer. The pair hit it off instantly, with Mike admitting they then went on a ‘boozy’ first date. He confessed, ‘Then we figured out that we both quite like getting smashed.’

PUT IN HIS PLACE

When Prince Harry announced his engagement to the then Meghan Markle in November 2017, close friend and cousin-in-law Mike hinted that he was hoping to be best man. He wasn’t so lucky. ‘When I saw they were getting married, I did text Prince Harry and say, “I’ve written my speech, I’m ready,”’ Mike revealed, adding ‘[Harry] said, “Sorry mate that job’s full but I do need someone to show people where to park their cars.”’

It seems even royals can dish out banter!
