Acting editor Katy Sunnassee takes the plunge in the latest sporty swimming costumes and mini wetsuits – perfect for open-water swimming

Finisterre Nieuwland 2e Yulex Long-Sleeve Swimsuit £150, finisterre.com

This long-sleeved suit is a versatile favourite for year-round water workouts. It’s built with Yulex natural rubber, which means it needs 10 times less water to produce, making it an eco-friendly option. It comes in an array of colours including this vibrant orange Flame/ Ink combo, which gives you more visibility in the water – asafety bonus if you’re using it for open-water swimming.

I tried it in a size 8, which I just about managed to squeeze into and, once on, it fitted like a glove and made me feel very secure – no need for bikini bottoms or a top underneath (no room for them, either!). The sleeves didn’t budge an inch when I was in the sea (on some costumes they ride up a little) as they were completely tight to my body. I liked the flattering cut around the bum, as despite being on the small side overall, it still didn’t dig in or ride up as the back is cut more generously than the front. The zip did come up very high though, which at first felt uncomfortable as it dug into my throat. However, once wet, I didn’t notice this so there was some give. I did feel safe enough to wear it with the zip down a few inches too, without worrying it would completely undo as the zip is very sturdy.

This costume is a little too thick for high summer – Itested it on a super-hot day – but would be great come autumn and I just love the colour! The only issue was trying to get it off: the material is so thick, I got stuck! I couldn’t get it down past my elbows and thought I was going to have to cut it off but luckily managed eventually. To be fair, this was probably due to it being a size 8 whereas I should have worn a 10 or 12 (which weren’t available for testing), so I’ve given it a four for functionality as I assume the 10/12 would be easier to remove. Note to the brand though: a longer zip would be good for your next design to facilitate an easier exit. After all, if you’ve been in cold water you want to change fast and there’s nothing worse than feeling stuck in your costume!

I’m a size 10/12 and this arrived in a 12 and I was initially worried it would be too large as, laid out next to the Speedo one, it was
