World War II’s bloodiest battlefield On 22nd June 1941, at 03.15, the first German soldiers crossed the border into the Soviet Union. The future of Europe was at stake. If the German army succeeded, Hitler’s Nazi empire would have access to vast resources of steel, oil, aluminium and grain along with hundreds of arms factories and millions of fresh young men. This issue depicts the gruesome battles on the Eastern Front – from the surprise attack of Operation Barbarossa through to July 1943 when the Wehrmacht and the Red Army each threw everything they had into the Battle of Kursk.
