German blitzkrieg set the world on fire On 1st September, 1939 Germany invaded Poland. On 9th April, 1940 its troops occupied Norway and Denmark, roaring across the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France a month later. Hitler planned to invade Britain, but the RAF and British stood firm. Hitler then looked east. Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 and Japan’s bombs over Pearl Harbor later that year gave World War II a truly global context.
