Gymtimidation

Don’t let a fear of the gym hold you back from your wellbeing goals.

Words: Rosie Fitzmaurice

The start of a new year is when many of us prioritise our health, embarking on a new exercise routine, joining a new gym or taking up a fitness class for the first time. But a sense of gym anxiety – or ‘gymtimidation’ as it has become known – can sometimes become a barrier to entry. Feel intimidated at the thought of working out surrounded by mirrors and strangers who seem to know their way around fitness equipment better than you? You’re not alone.

‘Many of my clients say that the main obstacle to working out is a total fear of the gym,’ says personal trainer Caroline Idiens, aka @carolinescircuits. ‘This mainly stems from the weights section, where mostly men or very confident women are lifting heavy weights in a small area, which can make others feel out of place or lacking in confidence.’

It can be particularly overwhelming if you’re coming back to exercise after a break or are a total beginner. Follow these tips to overcome first-time nerves and feel more confident in that next session.

Find a safe space

When choosing a gym or fitness studio, it’s important to think beyond what’s nearby and convenient to get to (though obviously both of those factors are important, too). You need to feel comfortable in the space – you can easily get a sense of the ‘vibe’ by having a stroll around. If you’re a woman who wants to focus on strength training and the weights room feels intimidating, consider female-only classes (if they’re offered), or even a women-only dedicated strength-training facility, more of which are popping up all over the UK.

Think about the music – does it feel motivating or just too loud and aggressive? Are staff friendly and approachable? And lighting – dark studios may look intimidating at first glance, but there’s nothing more liberating than a workout where no one can see you.

Look the part

Wearing something you feel confident and comfortable in is an absolute must if you want to boss your workout, says Lucy Joslin (@lucyjoslin_), calisthenics coach and senior trainer at Mission yoga studio in London. That doesn’t mean you need to be kitted out in the most expensive gymwear, but it’s worth investing in a pair of quality leggings that offer the right level of support for your chosen activity.

The same goes for a well-fitting sports bra and workout top that doesn’t ride up or expose unwanted gaps that could distract you mid
