Recently, I got a notification from the memory section of my phone’s camera roll. The image that filled my screen evoked a rush of emotions which overwhelmed me like a whirlwind. Within seconds, I went from feeling angry to disappointed, then finally grateful. Some time ago, I sewed my first crisp, white blouse using the Bakerloo Sewing Pattern by Nina Lee London. But after the first wear, it was stained in the washing machine to the point of no return. Luckily, I salvaged the situation by dyeing the blouse and giving it a new lease of life.

In every sewer’s journey, the need to resize, reuse or reconstruct an old or pre-loved piece of clothing could always arise – so it's good to be preapred. There are times when we might get bored of a handmade item of clothing and decide to make minor or major alterations to rejuvenate it. On the other hand, we could find ourselves having to reuse a loved garment for something new as a result of damage or stains in prominent areas. In these sorts of situations, the options will depend on the item’s size, the severity of the damage, the location of the stains, the age, and its sentimental value. Whatever the situation, I have compiled some options for you to refer to whenever you find yourself in a situation that calls for some change.

Pre-loved garments can be transformed into quilted pieces by cutting them into squares that can be collected over time and pieced together to sew blankets or quilted cushion covers.
