In a 2015 study investigating upper airway infections in 50 cold-water swimmers, non-swimmers and indoor pool swimmers, cold-water swimmers reported significantly fewer respiratory tract infections (RTIs).
Experienced winter swimmers were also found to have higher white blood cell counts compared to control groups. This was evident in a study from 2011 of ice swimmers before and after a 150m winter swim at 6°C (43°F), which concluded greater protection against inflammation and RTIs is very likely, suggesting an improved response to stress.
