HEALTHY HABITS ARE CONTAGIOUS

We all know how hard it is to resist a birthday cake that’s doing the rounds in the office but, happily, the opposite is also true. German research has found employees are more likely to eat fruit and vegetables when their colleagues encourage a healthy lifestyle. So, it’s definitely worth booking a working lunch with that co-worker who’s always munching carrot sticks and makes their own juice!

LOWER YOUR HIP FRACTURE RISK

An additional 25g of daily protein has been shown to create an average of 14 per cent reduction in the risk of hip fracture. The benefits were even greater in women who were under weight, with a risk reduction of a whopping 45 per cent. The extra protein can come in any form, including meat, dairy, eggs, beans, nuts and legumes, according to the research by the University of Leeds. You can get 25g of protein from a piece of salmon, a steak or two eggs.

KEEP IT GREEN

We’ve long known the many benefits of following a Mediterranean-style diet. However, making a slight adjustment can help you burn visceral fat at four-times the rate of other diets. The Green Mediterranean Diet includes the usual pulses, wholegrains, nuts, fish and olive oils but puts an extra emphasis on leafy greens, as well as drinking three-to-four cups of green tea per day. Participants in the study, published in BMC Medicine, followed the diet for 18 months and dropped an impressive 14 per cent of visceral fat (this wraps around organs and triggers inflammation) on average, compared to 4.5 per cent for those following a standard healthy diet.
