Welcome!

This being the January issue, we’ve got a new year kind of vibe going on, naturally, although I’m well aware it hits the shops on December 22, meaning many of you, including subscribers, will be reading this before January 1! However, my hope is that it gives you some healthy living/eating encouragement not only for January but for all of 2024.

I’ve long given up trying to set resolutions; doing so just sets you (me!) up for failure, in my opinion. In that same vein, our piece by Jenny McDonald, who goes by the delightful name of The Food Freedom Fairy (page 52), shares reasons why not to start a diet come January 1, and why it’s counterproductive to starve yourself and expect to never again eat a chocolate (I know, I know, I said in my column last issue I was quitting desserts for good, but let’s be realistic, sometimes a chocolate or two will pass my lips, just nowhere near as often, as my insides can no longer take it). Jenny advises eating real, whole foods and swerving anything processed... very similar to the advice from our cover star Davinia Taylor (page 16), who is passionate about teaching us all to read labels and avoid “fake foods” with tons of ingredients.

It was a pleasure to chat to Davinia not once but twice (so much to talk about!) and hear how eating real, nutrient-dense foods, including lots of good-quality fats, helped her regain her energy, lose weight and feel amazing. This change didn’t come overnight, it came from taking baby steps each day in the right direction, adding one new thing at a time to her lifestyle. Which reminds me: do take a look at the Top Santé manifesto, tucked away in a box on page 4. I penned it back in January 2015, so almost a decade ago, but I feel it’s just as relevant now as it was then.

Let’s leave the past behind, do better with the knowledge we now have, and make 2024 the healthiest we can, one small step at a time. Santé!
