Someone once told me that when you are gardening you should focus on one area and finish it before moving on to another part. A slow process but one that is, they said, effective. Each year, I try to implement this and, every year, I fail. Whether it’s a small child requiring my attention, a grown man (my husband) asking me a question or a dog deciding that the well-turned soil now looks like a great place to dig, the distractions are endless. And, there’s the rub. While I dream of a tidy garden with all the trappings of heritage venues like Wisley, and a swinging chair where I can sit with a good book, the reality is that it often looks a little wild. The cottage ‘look’, as I like to describe it!
