Why travel cover could save you THOUSANDS

One in four people think they don’t need travel insurance*, but not taking out a policy could be a very costly mistake…

DON’T PUT IT OFF

Forgetting to buy it, believing it’s too dear or an unnecessary cost or thinking your holiday is too short to bother are some of the common reasons people skip travel insurance.

But, while it’s not a legal requirement, it can save you thousands if something goes wrong before or during your trip, such as cancelled flights, unexpected illnesses and, importantly, accidents when you’re abroad.

According to the Association of British Insurers, in one case the cost of medical treatment in Spain following a fall and emergency return back to the UK was an eye-watering £124,000. Imagine not having travel insurance to cover that sort of bill.

BUY WHEN YOU BOOK

Always buy your travel insurance as soon as possible. Leaving it to the last minute means you miss out on vital cover should something go wrong in the run-up to your holiday. For example, if you become too ill to travel.

BE HONEST

When purchasing, declare all your medical conditions even if you do not think they are relevant. By not doing so, your policy could become void and worthless.

PICK THE RIGHT POLICY

It’s easy to buy a policy via a comparison site or direct from an insurer, and while you’ll want a good price, be sure to pick the right level of cover. For example, if you plan to do water sports, ensure you’re covered. Make sure the policy covers the regions you are going into and check you’re not going anywhere against Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advice, as your travel insurance will not cover you. Check your destination at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice.

GHIC CARD

Having a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is great if you find you need medical help when travelling in the EU. It replaces the European Health Insurance Card and gives you access to the same state healthcare as residents of the country you’re in – this may be free or subsidised. If you have an EHIC card, you can use it until it expires, after which you should get the free GHIC card; search for it at nhs.uk. But remember, a GHIC is no substitute for travel insurance as it will not protect you from lost baggage, cancelled flights or the cost of returning home in an emergenc
