KATE New crisis

Last month, Womanreported that Kate Garraway felt ‘ashamed’ after finding herself in debt following four years of expensive treatment to care for her late husband, Derek Draper. She admitted at the time, ‘It’s unaffordable for well-paid TV presenters like me, let alone normal people.’ Now, the GMBpresenter has revealed that she has been forced to use money from her pension to help cover costs. ‘I’ve had to withdraw the [tax-free] bit to pay belated bills for my husband who passed away,’ she confessed. Kate, who estimates her debt is between £500,000 and £800,000, added, ‘People are having to do things – it wasn’t a huge pension in the first place – which aren’t what they saved for.’

Shortly after Derek’s death in January, the star, 57, admitted that she had not been asked to repay her outstanding bills. ‘To be fair to them, no one’s contacted me since he’s passed away to ask for that.’ Though she added, ‘They may well still do, but they haven’t as yet.’ But her recent comments suggest that has now changed, no doubt adding additional pressure on Kate as she adjusts to life as a single mum to her and Derek’s two children, Darcey, 18, and Billy, 14.

Previously, the broadcaster shared that Derek’s care cost £4,000 a week, far more than her ITV salary could cover. ‘How can I afford that? How can anybody afford £16,000 a month?’ she said, adding, ‘I can’t earn enough money to cover my debt. I have an incredible job and it’s well paid. But it’s not enough.’

SHARON’S TV MOVE

Has Sharon Osbourne’s stint in the Celebrity Big Brother house reignited her love for reality TV? When quizzed if she’d consider rebooting The Osbournes, the former X Factor judge replied, ‘You should never say never.’ However, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up just yet as Shaz, 71, added, ‘But I don’t really think about it.’ She explained, ‘It’s not something I go, “Oh God, I’ve got to get back into the world of reality.”’ But the star, whose family life was documented for four series from 2002 to 2005, also didn’t shut down the prospect completely, concluding, ‘Like I say, you never say never, but they better do it quick before I croak.’
