Welcome to women’s health

We’ve said it on the cover and I’ll say it again: hello, 2023! Last year, and all its chaos, can do one. Let’s look forward to the next 12 months and embrace all the challenges they will undoubtedly throw at us with the gumption I know Women’s Health readers have in spades.

As is tradition, I’ve been setting some… let’s call them objectives, for the year ahead. And while I’m as guilty as the next person of rolling out those on-repeat resolutions – shift a few pounds, eat less almond butter (I cannot be held responsible for my consumption once the jar is open) – this year, I’ve taken some time to dig deep and really think about how I want to improve for myself and my loved ones. One thing I know I need to work on is my patience – or, to put it bluntly, my total lack of it. It’s my two children, Zak, 10, and seven-year-old Nell, who bear the brunt of it; on school mornings, my yelling up the stairs grates on my own nerves, let alone theirs. So, instead, I’m adopting a breathe, not bellow, approach. Whenever I’m about to shout, I’ll stop, breathe and assess whether my frustration is valid before calmly communicating my emotions without raising my voice. Reckon I’ll keep it up for as long as this bumper issue of Women’s Health is on sale?

And what a treat of an issue it is. Everything you need to set yourself up for your healthiest year yet is inside, from a 28-day fitness challenge (p68) to help you start as you mean to go on, to a report on the latest science on weight loss (p44) and our big health and fitness trends round-up (p114); think of it as your 2023 wellness bible. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be kicking things off with Lioness-in-chief Leah Williamson on the cover. She is inspiration personified and I hope she’s selected to lead England to World Cup glory this summer, just as she did in the Euros last July. Read her no-holds-barred in
