HEALING HEEL PAIN

Researchers from Sahmyook University in South Korea (syu.ac.kr.eng) have developed a novel approach to treat plantar fasciitis (PF), a common musculoskeletal disorder affecting the heel, that many runners will be familiar with.

Traditionally, sufferers use extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), but this can be both costly and painful. In a randomised controlled trial, the researchers combined local vibration with ESWT, which proved more effective in treating the plantar fasciitis condition and caused less pain to the participants compared to conventional ESWT.

Runners suffering from PF can be completely debilitated by this common musculoskeletal, inflammatory condition. It’s characterised by severe pain in the heel of the foot, to the extent that it limits day-to-day activities. The plantar fascia ligament, a fibrous connecting tissue, supports the arch of the foot and functions as a shock absorber, similar to modern-day car suspension systems. With increased activity, the ligament can experience tears and damage, leading to the development of PF.

The research, published in the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine, gives many runners hope that future treatment, which currently includes pain management with anti-inflammatory drugs, stretching exercises, night-splint therapy, steroidal medication and extracorporeal shock wave therapy will be less complicated and painful.
