Having the correct running form will impact how fast and long you can run without getting tired. It’s critical for people who want to focus on improving their running technique because it helps them prevent injury and stay strong and healthy. Mike Griffin, Runners Need Exeter in-store expert and British Triathlon Federation Coach, says: “Improving your running form will help you run faster, more efficiently and more comfortably. It could create less stress on your body and reduce the risk of injury too.

“Correct running form could also lessen the chance of fatigue and will likely mean you’re getting the most out of your run.” So, what can you do to improve your running form? Griffin focuses on seven areas which will help.

• Maintain a tall posture. Your running posture is one of the key factors when achieving good, efficient form. You should always keep your posture straight. “Keep your head up high, your back straight and your shoulders level,” advises Griffin. The best runners put great importance on their form and continuously evaluate the perfect running form that works best for them.

• Look ahead. You should make sure you avoid looking at your feet, and instead, look straight ahead. Not only is this the correct running form, it keeps your airways open, and it’s also safer because you can see what’s coming and avoid falling.

• Keep your hands relaxed and at your waist. You should always try to keep your hands at waist level, and your arms at a 90-degree angle. Some beginners tend to hold their hands up by their chest, which will make you get tired quicker. “Try to keep your arms and hands as relaxed as possible and avoid tightening your hands into fists,” says Griffin.

• Relax your shoulders.
